Fiskars’ plastic handled scissors-1967
In the early 1960s, fiscals decided to create a new type of scissors with handles molded out of plastic. It was concerned that cutting with ordinary scissors caused chafing on the thumb and middle fingers, and it believed that the problem lay with the design of the loops.
After a period of development, fiscals came up with a totally new shape for its first orange-handle classic scissors. Combining comfort with ease of use, these featured smooth-edged loops in mounded plastic. While the upper loop supported the palm of the handle at the root of the thumb, the lower loop accommodated more than one finger to equal the power of the thumb.
Production of the all-purpose orange-handled scissors began in 1967, when 2000 units were manufactured.
Since then, fiskas has introduced many successful new styles, for a wide range of uses, including needlework, dressmaking and hairdressing. And the scissors are now exported to markers around the world.
The plastic handles are made of polybotylene-terephthalate, chosen, in part, because of its durability.
Importantly, it is resistant to common chemicals, such as solvents and grease. In addition, the scissors are machine washable and they can be left lying in the sun, or sterilized in an autoclave at temperatures approaching 140 temperature.
